I got lucky

| Reviewer: John Urga, |
I found this book at my local book shop, stored in the wrong section, which means I wasn't really looking for anything of this sort at that moment. But as it deals with a field in which I am very involved, I started browsing the table of contents. This led to browsing the book itself, and I spent the next 25 minutes musing through some of the very hands-on lists and examples the author provides. This book made simple for me some things with which I had been struggling, and it led exactly in the direction my own vague instincts needed to go. It cleared up things I understood only vaguely about the technique of writng sales copy, and then led me a couple of steps further in a logical sequence, and finally it just took off and revealed in excellent details many points which, on my own, I might have started to approach in another couple of years of work!
The book is so solid because it explains technical skills in a way that is thorough and well-organized, and although it's not one of those weigh-ten-pounds guides to a field, it still works as a reference, or almost a dictionary, for a very large number of useful ideas.
I wanted to stay in the book store and browse until I'd read the whole thing, but I realized this was one I needed to take home with me. I've been using it for two months now and I really feel a little guilty that I didn't write this review sooner. I'd like to make up for that by giving an extra 'star', but five's the max. Oh well, it's not really a matter of putting little 'stars' on this one. Next time you're in a book-store you might want too see for yourself. |
Great reference book - empowering language.

| Great reference book. I design and write copy for websites and other media. I know I often have only seconds to grab a viewers attention and I have to "say it with sizzle" as quickly as possible. This book covers several different categories of writing and is an easy read. I use it in both the brainstorming and the refining process. Ms. Oliver's tips empower my language. |

This book is a contemporary Thesaurus and handbook for those who write advertising or promotional copy, or want to jazz up their delivery. Anyone new to this kind of writing or is thinking of getting into it will certainly appreciate having this book at their fingertips.

used "Power Sales Words" to produce a sponsorship video
|
| Review Date: March 15, 2007 |
| Reviewer: David Edwards, New York, NY United States |
Recently, I was asked to help out Nantucket Community Sailing by writing and producing a video about the organization for prospective sponsors of Nantucket Race Week. I was asked because it's known that I have an (extremely modest) knowledge of how to operate a video camera, which made me an expert relative to everyone else.
I've never actually written a script before, or indeed, tried anything in marketing of this nature. "Power Sales Words" helped me figure out who our prospective sponsors were, what our pitch was, and how to frame the pitch appropriately.
Very glad to have found this book, because the resulting video is a huge improvement over what we did last year, and now that we've done it once, we know how to make it better next time.
